Feeling at Home

Tonight I made my weekly trek down to GG. My regular dinner partner Jeannie wasn’t able to meet up. She is housesitting for a friend out in Corona, so she is meeting up with Jane at our house for dinner. So before I needed to be in GG, I met up with Son at my old stomping grounds…UC Irvine. He was there for a rehersal for his dance class. It turned out his rehersal was cancelled, so he hung out with me. We ate at Lee’s Sandwiches, which is right across the street from the UCI campus. Ever since I been making my weekly treks down to GG, I’ve been eating at Lee’s in GG. The one in Irvine is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay nicer. However I was extremely disappointed because 1) they ran out of the beef sandwiches and 2) they don’t sell the boba drinks they sell at the GG Lee’s. I’ve been craving a boba coffee all week. I’m going to have to fill out a comment card or something. I was mad. UCI is like 70% Asian…how can they not sell boba drinks there? Sheesh.

I got very nostalgic being at UCI. Some of the best years of my life were spent studying goofing around there. Most of my close friends I have today, I met at UCI. Heck, I met my wife there. How can this not be a special place for me. I enjoyed being there today even though I didn’t get the chance to walk around the campus much. I did however get to drive around the campus for a bit when I got there because I arrived via a road I have never taken before. I got completely lost as I was driving around campus. There were so many new buildings and roads there that were not there the last time I was on campus…about 8 years ago. It looked totally different. I was driving around the campus for about 2 or 3 minutes before I even saw a building I recognized. :D

Son, on the other hand hates UCI. He went there as an undergrad for 1 year, hated it and then transferred to University of ** *****, which is where I work. He finished his undergrad there, then applied for grad school at where else? UCI. Now that he’s back at UCI, he’s come to the realization that he still hates it there. He said the way I feel about UCI, is how he feels about University of ** *****.

Anyways after dinner, we made a quick stop by the performing arts center at UCI, the check out Panopticon, an art exhibit put on by graduating seniors. On our way to the art gallery, Son kept pointing out various girls and saying, “she’s a dance major.” I’d ask, “Yeah? Do you know her?” He’d reply, “nope.”. He said he just knows which girls are the dance majors by the way they look. I think he has danceDar. :D Anywho, while we were at the exhibit, I ran into Pam, who has a piece in the exhibit…a nice b&w photography piece. Being that I love b&w photography, I thought hers was one of the best there. There was a REALLY cool piece there. It was a 6 foot tall pinart exhibit. I wish I had my camera there to take a picture of it. Instead of pins, it used these giant 6 inch long nails. And the impression made in the design was that of a person. I also ran into Jen, who was there with Pam. For two people, who are so talkative on their Xangas…they sure were shy in person. :D haha. Anyways, after being avid readers of their blogs, it was nice to finally meet them.

From there, I split and headed off to GG.

  1. Please, UCI is more like 95% Asian! I feel so out of place! Oh wait, I’m Asian too… I don’t hate UCI, I just hate their CompSci department!

And it’s not “danceDar” that I have, it’s more like “pretty-girl-Dar”!!! Hehe

By the way, I took some pictures for you after you left! Posted it on my site, you are welcome to steal it if you want! Also, sorry that I didn’t get a chance to say hi to your friends, Pam and Jen, I was a little “distracted” at that time!

  3. Man, I haven’t been back to UCI in ages! There are definitely a lot of memories from that place. Geeze, I saw a report on TV last night about the problems of students doing the “Hour of Power”. Ring a bell, Pete? You should tell everyone how much you had to drink before puking. He he he. Seriously, though, I should pay our old school a visit sometime.

So, is this Lee’s place the hot place to hang out now or something? Never heard of it. I would love to get back to a place, though, where I can have easy access to boba tea. Uh-oh…might get fat. When I get back to the West Coast, I gotta go back to an L&L Drive-inn. Mmmmmm…gotta have some spam musubi!
