Thailand Trip: Day 1

(April 30 - May 1, 2004)

How the hell can we downgrade our seats? That was the feeling we had on the plane ride to Thailand. More on that later.

Sunny came over and around 12:00pm, we headed over to the airport. On our way to the airport, Jane remembered that we forgot the Cheetos for Nicha! DOH! When we asked Nicha(my brother’s wife), what she wanted us to bring her from America, she said she wanted one and only one thing…Cheetos…and a lot of them. Shit! So how did we forget?!? So anyways, we were a few miles away from the airport. We exited and found a Food4Less. I ran down and grabbed a bunch of Cheetos and we were on our way.

When we got to the airport, Sunny dropped us of. Before we checked our luggage in, we had to open our suitcases and cram six medium sized bags of Cheetos wherever I could find room. We got our luggage scanned, then checked in. We tried to see if we could upgrade our seats to Business Class. Paul and Nicha worked their butts off to get EVA Air to allow them to transfer all their miles over to our accounts. So we had enough miles to upgrade our seats from Evergreen Deluxe to Business Class for at least the trip from LA to the stopover, Taipei. But there were no seats available in Business. Oh well.

We hung out at the airport until it was time to board. When we got on the airplane, the first thing I noticed was that the armrests for our Duluxe Class seats do not fold up. Crap! We were planning on folding the arms up so that Jessie would have room to sleep. Greeeeeeeeeeeeeat. Stupid Evergreen Deluxe Class. We gave Jessie a bottle as our flight took off…to help counteract the discomfort that the change in air pressure might cause. She did great. But then she got a bit cranky later. So we busted out the toys first. The new Sesame Street toys kept her busy for an hour or so. But then they served a meal, so we figured Jessie would eat and then be ready to sleep. She ended up eating almost nothing. She then got very fidgety. She started crying. We walked her around…up and down the aisles. But that did not seem to help much. It was only about two and a half ours into the plane ride and she was already making a scene. So we sat her down and whipped out the portable DVD player. I threw in a Sesame Street DVD and tried to turn on the player. CRAP!!! I forgot to charge the battery. ARRRRGH!!! Jane was mad at me. And at this point, Jessie was getting pissed off too, because she was expecting to watch Sesame Street, and now I was packing the DVD player up. We did the only thing we could do. We busted out the Benedryl and gave her some. It didn’t seem to do anything. She seemed wide awake. But them about an hour later, she was out. There wasn’t enough room to lie her down sideways since the arms of the seats did not lift up. But the seats had foot rests that folded out, so we folded those out and stacked a few pillows on them and we lied Jessie down on the seat and extended foot rest. She didn’t look comfortable at all, but she slept for about NINE hours!!! Amazing. She did wake up crying a few times, but Jane was able to lull her back to sleep each time.

During the flight, we found out that the seats in Economy class have arms that fold up. Damn. We so wanted to move to Economy class. There were so many empty seats, but everyone had the arms folded up and were using multiple seats. There were a lot of people that had entire rows to themselves…but they had the arms folded up and they were sleeping using the entire row. So now we’re wondering if we can downgrade our seats for the plane ride home. If not, we’re hoping that there are empty seats on the ride home, so we can at least move ourselves to Economy once we’re airborne. I bet that’s a first…people wanting to downgrade their seats.

Anyways, we arrived in Taipei and then after an hour and a half stopover, we were on our way to Bangkok. When we arrived, the second we landed Jane looked at me and said, “Mangosteen!” Haha. We were now in the land of the mangosteen. I wouldn’t wait to have some. After we got off, we quickly made our way through immigration, picked up our luggage and then met up with Paul, Nicha, my aunt, and my cousin. From there, we made our way over to Paul and Nicha’s apartment. When we got there, it was around 3AM. Did we sleep? Nope. We ate mangosteen! And we had some pomelo too. Pure heaven! Then Nicha cooked up some Laht Nah(Thai noodles with beef and brocoli). Yum! By the time we went to sleep it was 4:30AM.
